Twee tot drie dagen dekken de belangrijkste bezienswaardigheden, het eten en de boulevard van de stad. Voeg er één of twee toe voor dagtrips naar Meteora, Vergina, de berg Olympus of de stranden van Halkidiki.
Luchthaven Thessaloniki (SKG, Makedonia) ligt ongeveer 13 km ten zuidoosten van het centrum met directe vluchten door heel Europa. Frequente treinen en intercity KTEL-bussen verbinden het ook met Athene (ongeveer 4,5–5,5 uur) en de rest van de Balkan.
Mei–Juni en September–Oktober brengen warm weer, zwembare zee en minder drukte. De zomer is heet en levendig; de winter is mild en ideaal voor musea, taverna's en de cafécultuur van de stad.
Thessaloniki is een van de veiligere grote steden van Europa, met weinig geweldsmisdaad en een ontspannen sfeer dag en nacht — de meeste bezoekers lopen comfortabel door het centrum en de boulevard na donker. De gebruikelijke voorzichtigheid met zakkenrollers geldt in de drukke markten, in volle bussen en in het volgepakte nachtleven van Valaoritou.
Nee — het is merkbaar goedkoper dan Athene of de Griekse eilanden. Streetfood zoals bougatsa of een gyros kost een euro of twee, een gedeeld meze-diner met tsipouro komt op ongeveer €15–25 per persoon, en hotels en musea bieden het hele jaar door goede waarde.
De White Tower, door UNESCO erkende Byzantijnse kerken, de Rotunda en de Boog van Galerius, bougatsa en streetfood, de oude stad Ano Poli, een lange zeepromenade, en dat het de eet- en nachtlevenhoofdstad van Griekenland is.
