Geschiedenis

Hoe het ontstond

A church has stood here since the 5th century; the present basilica preserves mosaics from the 7th century that survived even the great fire of 1917, after which it was faithfully rebuilt and reopened in 1949. The relics of St Demetrius, long held in Italy, were returned to the church in the late 20th century, and it remains Thessaloniki's most important pilgrimage site. It is one of the UNESCO-listed Paleochristian and Byzantine Monuments of Thessaloniki.
