Geschiedenis

Hoe het ontstond

Commissioned by Sultan Murad II soon after the Ottoman conquest, the Bey Hamam served the city as public baths — later nicknamed the 'Baths of Paradise' — for around five centuries until 1968. It is now a protected monument used for exhibitions.

Goed om te Weten

No — the baths closed in 1968 and the building is now a monument and exhibition space, not a working hammam.

It was built in 1444 by Sultan Murad II, only a few years after the Ottoman conquest — making it the grandest Ottoman bathhouse in Greece and the oldest in Thessaloniki. It's a 'double' (çifte) hamam, with separate parallel wings for men and women, and served the city as public baths for over five centuries.
