Thessaloniki was Atatürk's birthplace when the city was still Ottoman. The house, in the grounds of the Turkish Consulate, was turned into a museum and preserves rooms laid out as they would have been in his childhood.

Because Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey, was born here in 1881, when the city was the Ottoman port of Selânik. He was schooled in the city before his military career took him to Istanbul. The house is preserved as a free museum, furnished in late-Ottoman period style, with a pomegranate tree said to have been planted by his father in the courtyard.

Byzantine (early 14th c.)

Church of Agios Nikolaos Orfanos

A small church of around 1310–1320 in the upper town whose interior is covered, almost wall to wall, with exceptionally well-preserved Palaiologan frescoes — spared because, unusually among the city's Byzantine churches, it was never turned into a mosque under Ottoman rule, so its walls were never plastered over.
