Wie es entstand
Built around 450 AD, it is among the earliest surviving basilicas in the Christian world and part of Thessaloniki's UNESCO monuments. After the 1430 conquest it became the first of the city's churches turned into a mosque — by Sultan Murad II himself, who made it Thessaloniki's principal mosque — and an Ottoman inscription on a column still records the event.

It means 'made without hands', a reference to a miraculous icon of the Virgin once kept here.
It's a 5th-century early-Christian basilica — one of the oldest churches in Thessaloniki still in continuous use, and among the earliest surviving churches anywhere. Elegant columns and fine early mosaic fragments remain inside, and it's one of the city's fifteen UNESCO-listed monuments.
