- September still feels like summer: warm, sunny days (highs around 27°C) and a sea that's often warmer than in June, so early-autumn swimming off Halkidiki is very much on. It's one of the best months of the year to be here.
- October is mild and comfortable (highs around 21°C) — light layers, the odd shower, and ideal walking weather for the monuments and the waterfront without summer's glare.
- November turns cooler and wetter (highs around 15°C), with shorter days and a first hint of winter, though it's still perfectly good for a city break built around indoor culture and long lunches.

The festival season
Autumn is the city's busiest cultural stretch of the year — the heart of Thessaloniki's year-round events calendar:
- Thessaloniki International Fair (ΔΕΘ) — early September (5–13 September in 2026). Greece's biggest trade exhibition takes over the fairgrounds with pavilions, a country of honour (Japan in 2026), and a packed public programme of talks and concerts. The 2026 edition is the 90th, marking a century since the first fair in 1926. Expect a buzzing city and full hotels, so book ahead if you're here for it.
- Reworks Festival — mid-September (16–20 September in 2026). A long-running electronic-music and arts festival across city venues.
- Street Mode Festival — mid-September (12–13 September in 2026). Billed as the largest open-air festival in northern Greece: a street-culture blowout at the industrial port waterfront with hip-hop, rock and electronic stages alongside live graffiti, breakdance battles and skate contests.
- Dimitria Festival — across October (1–24 October in 2026). The city's flagship cultural festival, named for its patron saint, fills the autumn with concerts, theatre, dance and exhibitions at venues across town.
- Agios Dimitrios & Ohi Day — 26–28 October. The patron saint's day on the 26th (see the Agios Dimitrios church) runs straight into the national Ohi Day military parade on the 28th along the seafront — a festive, flag-draped few days that also mark the city's liberation.
- Thessaloniki International Film Festival — mid-November (5–15 November in 2026). One of southeast Europe's most important film events, filling cinemas and the waterfront warehouses with screenings, crowds and a real festival buzz.
What to do
With the beach season winding down, autumn tilts toward the city's indoor riches — the museums, the Byzantine churches, the markets and the food. It's harvest season, so tavernas lean into the new wine and autumn produce, and the café culture moves happily back indoors.
