Can you climb Mount Olympus in a day?
Honestly, no — not to the top. Reaching Mytikas (2,917 m), the highest of Greece's peaks, is a two-day undertaking, almost always with an overnight at a mountain refuge such as Spilios Agapitos before a pre-dawn push to the summit. (For the record, Olympus was first climbed in 1913, by Frédéric Boissonas, Daniel Baud-Bovy and the local guide Christos Kakkalos.)
For a day from Thessaloniki, aim lower and you'll still feel the scale:
- Enipeas Gorge — the classic day walk, a shaded river-canyon trail of pools, footbridges and waterfalls running up toward Prionia. Do an out-and-back section; you don't need to finish it.
- Prionia trailhead — drive the winding road to ~1,100 m and walk the forest paths from there for big views without a summit attempt.
- Litochoro itself — a handsome stone town with tavernas, an easy base if you'd rather amble than hike.
Ancient Dion: the other half of the trip
At the foot of Olympus lies Dion, the Macedonians' sacred city, where kings held a nine-day festival to Zeus before campaigns — Alexander the Great sacrificed here before setting out to conquer Asia. Its archaeological park spreads across watery meadows fed by Olympus springs, with temples, baths, mosaics and a theatre, and an excellent museum in the modern village. It's flat and far less crowded than Vergina — an ideal lower-altitude pairing with a short gorge walk for a complete day. Entry is €10 (reduced €5) — a single ticket covering both the archaeological park and the museum in Dion village — and it's closed on Tuesdays year-round, plus Wednesdays in winter. The park keeps generous summer hours, 08:00–20:00, so you can walk it first thing before the heat (it has little shade); the village museum opens later, around 11:00, in summer. In winter both run 08:30–15:30. Either way, avoid a Tuesday.
