War Museum of Thessaloniki

Actualizado 2026Verificado a pieNear the New Waterfront and the fairgrounds, city centre

A compact military-history museum in a restored early-1900s army building, tracing Greece's modern wars through uniforms, weapons, war art, maps and photographs — with an outdoor forecourt of tanks and a fighter jet. Its focus fits the city perfectly: Thessaloniki was the great Allied base of the First World War's Macedonian Front.

Historia

Cómo surgió

Housed in a military building from the early 20th century, part of the old army quarters, it opened around 2000 as the northern branch of the Athens War Museum. The collection leans into the region's history — the Balkan Wars that won Thessaloniki for Greece in 1912, the WWI Salonika (Macedonian) Front based in and around the city, and the Greek experience of the Second World War.

Bueno Saber

For the local angle on big history: Thessaloniki was the Allied base of the First World War's Macedonian Front, and the museum tells that story alongside the Balkan Wars and WWII through uniforms, weapons and maps. The outdoor park of tanks and a fighter jet makes it a hit with families too, and it sits right by the New Waterfront.

Indoor galleries of military uniforms (from evzones to the World Wars), historic firearms and artillery, war art, and maps and photographs of the Macedonian Front; and an outdoor forecourt with armoured vehicles and an F-5 jet. Allow about an hour to an hour and a half.
