The mountain of the gods

Mount Olympus is where Greek myth placed the home of Zeus and the twelve Olympian gods — and standing beneath its cloud-wrapped peaks, you understand why. It is the highest mountain in Greece, topping out at 2,917 m at the peak of Mytikas, and Greece's first national park (declared in 1938) as well as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The massif is a world of deep gorges, beech and pine forest, alpine meadows and bare limestone summits, with more than 1,700 plant species. It rises almost straight from the Aegean coast, which is part of what makes it feel so dramatic.

How to do it from Thessaloniki

The gateway is the handsome town of Litochoro, about 90 km / one hour south by car on the A1 motorway; trains also stop at Litochoro and nearby Leptokarya. From Litochoro a road climbs to the Prionia trailhead, the usual start for the long ascent toward the refuges and Mytikas.

A full summit is a two-day climb with an overnight at a refuge and some exposed scrambling near the top — not a casual day out. For a day trip, the Enipeas Gorge walk from Litochoro is the highlight: a shaded river trail past pools and the old monastery of Agios Dionysios.

Ancient Dion

At the eastern foot of the mountain lies Dion, the Macedonians' sacred city, where kings made offerings to Zeus before campaigns. Its excavated sanctuaries, theatres and mosaics — plus an excellent museum — make a rewarding, easy half-day even if you never lace up hiking boots.

Preguntas frecuentes

How high is Mount Olympus?+

Its highest peak, Mytikas, reaches 2,917 m — the tallest point in Greece. It was first climbed in 1913 by Frédéric Boissonas, Daniel Baud-Bovy and the local guide Christos Kakkalos. There are over 50 peaks in the massif; Mytikas, Skala and Skolio are the best known.

Can you climb it in a day from Thessaloniki?+

Reaching Mytikas is a serious two-day undertaking, usually with an overnight at a mountain refuge such as Spilios Agapitos. For a day trip, drive to Litochoro and walk part of the beautiful Enipeas Gorge, or hike from the Prionia trailhead — no summit required to feel the scale of the place.

What is there to see besides the mountain?+

At the foot of Olympus lies ancient Dion, the sacred city where the Macedonians held a nine-day festival to Zeus. Its archaeological park and museum, plus the seaside town of Litochoro, make an easy lower-altitude alternative to a full climb.

What are Dion's opening hours and entry fee?+

Entry to ancient Dion is about €10, covering the archaeological park and the museum (free on the Greek museum days: 6 Mar, 18 Apr, 18 May, the last weekend of Sep, 28 Oct). It is closed on Tuesdays year-round (and also on Wednesdays in winter, November–March). In summer it opens late, at 11:00, and runs to about 20:00; in winter it is 08:30–15:30. So pair Dion with a morning gorge walk rather than arriving first thing, and avoid a Tuesday.
